Culture is like water to a fish—it surrounds us so completely that we often don't notice its presence until we step into different world.
From the very beginning of life, we are immersed in beliefs, values, traditions, expectations, and unspoken rules that shape who we are and how we relate to ourselves, others, and the world around us. Over time, these influences become so deeply woven into our lives through our families, communities, education, media, religion, and the broader society that they often feel inseparable from our identity. We may even mistake them for our own thoughts, choices, or beliefs, without realizing how profoundly they color the way we see ourselves and the world.
As someone who has experienced immigration and life as part of a minority community, I understand many of the complexities of acculturation, multicultural relationships, and living between different cultural worlds. I also recognize the challenges many families face as they strive to preserve their cultural, religious, and family values while adapting to a new environment. Adolescents and young adults often navigate additional tensions as they balance the expectations of home with the opportunities, values, and influences of the wider society.
These experiences have shaped me in meaningful ways, deepening my awareness of how culture, identity, and belonging influence our emotional lives, relationships, and sense of self. They have also shown me that culture is never one-dimensional. Even within the same family, individuals may hold different beliefs, traditions, values, and ways of making meaning of their own lives.
Every culture has its own language for expressing and making sense of emotional distress, grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, and life's many challenges. Culture also shapes how we experience joy, love, success, relationships, spirituality, and healing. There is no single or universal way to hold these moments, and no two individuals carry their culture in exactly the same way.
As a culturally sensitive therapist providing online psychotherapy throughout California, I approach every therapeutic relationship with cultural humility, recognizing that each person is the expert on their own lived experience. Rather than making assumptions, I take time to understand your cultural identity, family relationships, values, traditions, language, faith or spirituality, personal history, and the experiences that have forged your path.
Therapy is not about asking you to fit into a single worldview. It is about seeing your life within the context of your unique cultural background while honoring the strengths, wisdom, resilience, and resources you already carry. Together, we create a space where every part of who you are is welcomed, explored, and respected.
